CONTEST THEME: “Spirit of the Islands”
What does the “Spirit of the Islands” mean to you? Express the unique spirit of the Aloha State and what makes Hawai‘i so special using the 737 airplane template we’ve provided on the Official Entry Form.
You do not have to include the Alaska Airlines Eskimo image or company logo as part of your design. You can utilize the entire area of the plane as shown on the Official Entry Form, for your artwork (and don’t worry about the windows — draw right over them!).
The Paint the Plane Contest is open to all students in grades kindergarten through 12 who attend State of Hawai‘i public schools or private schools, or who are in home-schooling programs.
Employees of Alaska Air Group and their dependents are not eligible to enter or win.

The Paint the Plane Contest will be judged by a panel of ten selected by Alaska Airlines, the Hawai‘i State Department of Education, and the Hawai‘i Association of Independent Schools. Preliminary judging will be conducted by selected members of the Pacific Islander Cultural Club, an employee resource group of Alaska Airlines. Judging will be based on originality, creativity, and ability to express the theme “Spirit of the Islands” in a positive and creative manner. Judging will not be based on the level of sophistication of the art. The judging panel will select three design finalists, which will be made available to Hawai‘i residents to vote for their favorite on this site. Voting period will be in December 2012. The results of the public vote will help determine the Grand Prize, Second Place and Third Place winners; however, Alaska Airlines reserves the right to select a Grand Prize winner who did not receive the most votes from the public. In addition to selecting the three finalists, the 10-member judging panel will choose an Honorable Mention from each grade level, kindergarten through 12.
Entrants in the 2012 Paint the Plane Contest should submit original artwork on the official entry form/template designed to promote the “Spirit of the Islands.”
Permissible methods to create the design include, but are not limited to, pencil, inks, paints, crayons and computer-aided designs. The artwork will be scanned, so 3-D elements such as fabric, clay, textures, etc., are not appropriate for this contest.
All artwork must be original. It must have been created solely by the entrant and never previously displayed or published. It must not be copied from, altered from, or be similar in appearance to any other art, photo, ad, or published material. By submitting an entry, the participant represents that his/her entry is original and does not violate the intellectual property rights of any other person or entity.
By entering this contest, contestants in the Paint the Plane Contest and their parents, guardians and/or legal representatives agree to assign all copyright, trademark and other intellectual property rights in their artwork to Alaska Airlines. Entrants and their parents, guardians and/or legal representatives further agree that Alaska Airlines may reproduce, distribute, display and modify the artwork globally, on a royalty-free basis for any lawful purpose.
By entering the Paint the Plane Contest, contestants and their parents, guardians and/or legal representatives grant Alaska Airlines permission to use their name, photograph, voice, biographical information, and likeness for lawful promotional purposes without further compensation or notice.

One (1) Grand Prize winner will be selected from among all eligible entries by the judging panel and public vote. Alaska Airlines will replicate the artwork of the Grand Prize winner on one of its 737 aircraft. The Grand Prize winner will also receive round-trip transportation for four people, valued up to $1,500 per trip, to any Alaska Airlines destination of their choice. Ground transportation, accommodations, baggage fees and other expenses are the responsibility of the winner. The Grand Prize winner will also receive a $5,000 cash scholarship from Alaska Airlines.
One (1) Second Place winner and one (1) Third Place winner will also be selected from among all eligible entries by the judging panel and public vote. The Second Place and Third Place winners will each receive round-trip transportation for four people, valued up to $1,500, to any Alaska Airlines destination of their choice. Ground transportation, accommodations, baggage fees, and other expenses are the responsibility of the winner.
The judges will also select one (1) Honorable Mention from each grade level, kindergarten through 12, excluding the grade of the Grand Prize winner, from among all eligible entries. Each Honorable Mention will receive a $1,000 cash scholarship from Alaska Airlines, for a total of twelve (12) $1,000 cash scholarships. Winners and Honorable Mentions will be announced in January 2013.
Winners and their parents or legal guardians may waive their right to receive prizes. Prizes are non-assignable and nontransferable. No substitutions allowed by winner. Prizes and individual components of prize packages are subject to availability and Alaska Airlines reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value.
Winners and their parents or legal guardians are solely responsible for reporting and payment of any taxes that may be imposed based on the receipt or use of their prizes. Winners and their legal guardians may be required to complete an affidavit of eligibility, and a liability and publicity release (except where prohibited by law), both of which must be returned to claim the prize. Failure to sign and return the affidavit or release may result in a winner’s disqualification, the forfeiture of his/her interest in the prize, and the award of the prize to a substitute winner.
