The Panel
Multi-media artist, with a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, Maile is presently an Associate Professor at Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, developing and teaching in a Native Hawaiian Creative Expression Program. Maile serves as an Affiliate Researcher at the Bishop Museum and has exhibited her works locally, nationally and internationally.
Recognized worldwide for his delicious fare and friendly personality, Sam has authored eleven top-selling cookbooks and writes a weekly column in Midweek, Hawai’i’s weekly newspaper. He has frequently appeared on hit Food Network programs including Extreme Cuisine, Emeril Live!, East Meets West with Ming Tsai, Sarah Moulton’s Cooking Live, Iron Chef America, The Food Network’s Luau Challenge, Dinner: Impossible, Chopped, and his latest, The Best I Ever Cooked. Sam oversees his talented team of chefs for his restaurant located on Hawai’i Island—Sam Choy’s Kai Lanai. Sam also donates his time doing auctioned dinners for Hospice, United Way, among others, for the community.
George is the director of the Kaua'i County Office of Economic Development.
Kumu Hula for Pa’u O Hi’iaka for over 35 years, Hokulani was a founding member, a parent, and a Director of Punana Leo O Maui Hawaiian Language Preschool. She was the first Maui Site Coordinator for Na Pua No’eau, The Center for Gifted and Talented Native Hawaiian Children, and she was the Culture and Education Manager for the Kaho’olawe Island Reserve Commission. Hokulani currently works at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center as Cultural Programs Director.
Jenna was raised in Hawai’i and graduated from the University of California in San Diego with a degree in Communications. Returning to Hawai’i, she joined the Hawai’i Association of Independent Schools and co-founded a farm-to-school program called “Grow Hawai’i.” She is a founding member of the Hawai’i Farm to School and School Garden Hui and the O’ahu Farm to School Network. Her passion is to inspire the next generation of youth in Hawai’i to become active and engaged leaders of their island communities.
Entertainer, dedicated volunteer, businesswoman, promoter extraordinaire and community leader, Carole co-founded the Great Aloha Run in 1985. It started with 11,698 participants, which set a Guinness world record for the largest number of entrants in a first-time sporting event. Today, it hosts nearly 30,000 entrants and has raised close to $10 million dollars for more than 150 charitable organizations in Hawai’i.
Award-winning and Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, Henry has won numerous Na Hoku Hano Hano Awards including “Male Vocalist of the Year,” “Song of the Year,” “Single of the Year,” and “Album of the Year.” He is also the author of the award-winning children’s book, A Beautiful Hawaiian Day, has appeared in the films, Damien and Waterworld and has made many television appearances.
President and CEO of the Hawai’i Tourism Authority, Mike was formerly the executive director of the Hawai’i State Teachers Association, the first president of PBS Hawai’i, director of the Hawai’i State Department of Human Resources Development and served as a state senator in the Hawai’i State Legislature for 10 years.
Recently appointed as the Educational Specialist for Fine Arts and World Language for the Hawai'i State Department of Education (DOE), Gina is excited to serve as an advocate for art and world language programs across the state. Gina has served as the Educational Specialist for Title III for the last two years, worked as a resource teacher in the Personnel Development Branch of the Office of Human Resources for four years, and taught at Moanalua High School for thirteen years.
A graduate from the Rhode Island School of Design, Melissa majored in Industrial Design with a Masters in Art and Design Teaching Education. She has worked for the Papalote Museo del Niño in Mexico City as an exhibit Designer, The Honolulu Museum of Art, The Contemporary Museum and teaches Graphic Design at Hawai’i Pacific University. Melissa recently participated in a TV design competition on HGTV called The White Room Challenge. She currently owns her own company called Unleash Studio, which focuses primarily on graphic, product and interior design.
Judging
Judging was based on originality, creativity, and ability to express the theme ³Spirit of the Islands² in a positive and creative manner. Judging was not based on the level of sophistication of the art.
The Winners
The Grand Prize and Second Place and Third Place winners were determined by public vote and the judging panel.
In addition to selecting the three finalists, the judging panel chose an Honorable Mention from each grade level, except the Grand Prize winner’s grade, kindergarten through 12.
